  1. 1866-1944. Russian painter, a pioneer of
  2. abstract art. Born in Moscow, he travelled
  3. widely, settling in Munich 1896. He was an
  4. originator of the Blaue Reiter movement
  5. 1911-12. From 1921 he taught at the Bauhaus
  6. school of design. He moved to Paris 1933,
  7. becoming a French citizen 1939. Kandinsky
  8. originally experimented with
  9. Post-Impressionist styles and Fauvism. Around
  10. 1910 he produced the first known examples of
  11. purely abstract work in 20th-century art. His
  12. highly coloured style had few imitators, but
  13. his theories on composition, Concerning the
  14. Spiritual in Art 1912, were taken up by the
  15. early abstract movement.
